Good afternoon, everybody, on this Monday, September 30th, 2024, and I've got all of your entertainment and pop culture news in one place. And on today's Afternoon Rush, we've got a bachelor baby arriving, Colton Underwood's, And a former contestant announces she is pregnant, plus a deranged man buys a Taylor Swift autographed guitar and smashes it to pieces with a hammer.
Cool, we'll have that update. And an update on Bachelor Joey's relationship as he enters his third week on Dancing with the Stars. What he said about wanting to dance with a married woman only. And Ariana Maddox dishes on what it's like to moderate a reunion, giving Andy Cohen props for how he handles those toxic situations.
I'll share what Vanderpump alum, Ariana Maddox has to say about that. And also a Tegan and Sarah pop duo. They weigh in on the chapel Rowan situation. Uh, maybe we can all learn a thing or two about boundaries. Uh, but I don't have any boundaries here. I appreciate you letting me be a part of your rush hour drive home.
And we'll have all those stories coming up next on the rush. Our first story of the day is Netflix co CEO in why the company cracked down on password sharing. Here's what he had to say. It was a couple of problems. One was revenue, but the other part of it was we, with this personalization, helping you find something to watch works better.
Um, if you don't have five or six different people using your account. So for us, it was a really, a way to really hone in with the personalization technology, but also a way to kind of test the value proposition. Sure. If you've got, uh, our average members are watching about two hours of Netflix every day.
Uh, so basically when you go back out to people and say, Hey, you know that thing that you're using for two hours a day and not paying for, we'd like you to get your own account. And what's turned out nicely about that is most people say, Yeah, that's well worth it for me to do that. Yeah, look. Netflix, I say this as somebody who has never had my own Netflix account.
I get it. They want people to pay their fair share. Netflix cracking down on password sharing is what the U S government should be doing on people who don't pay their fair share of taxes. Do you know what I mean? I'm not trying to make this political. I'm just saying if you're a millionaire out there and you hide your money in offshore accounts or Depreciate, you know, use loopholes to avoid it.
I just think everyone it's like, it's almost like this. Netflix could probably lower their prices if they, if nobody shared passwords, right? If everyone just paid their fair share, I don't know, five bucks a month, it would be fine. But you know, you've got a Netflix account with 17 different people using it.
And, um, we actually, we've, we've been borrowing from my mom. Uh, thank the, what have you ever done for me, mom? Well, you've let me use your Netflix account. We've been borrowing for her from her for years now. And my in laws were in town and they signed out of my mom's account so that they could sign in on their daughter's account.
Cause they were stealing from their daughter. I was stealing from my mom. It's a whole real, um, real ethical situation here. And now I can't sign back in. So I no longer have Netflix. At home. Will somebody pray for me? We'll go. Will somebody help me out there now? I don't need your DM saying, Oh, you can use my account.
I appreciate that. But I might just foot the bill and get my own Netflix because I'm sick of wondering what my dad thinks when he sees that all I watch are gold rush shows. It's like, why is Dave only watch gold rush reality TV, you know, but I love that Ted Sarandos here or whatever his name is, makes 50 million a year.
And he's going, well, we want. We want to crack down on the password sharing because we want to use our purse, our person, uh, what does he say? Personality experience. What the hell does he call it? Either way. It's like his personalization technology. That's what he called it. It's like, no bro, you want to maximize profits.
And I get that. He's right. Look, you watch a lot of it. You might as well pay for it. I understand begrudgingly. We will finally have to do that. Alright, well, I've got Bachelor Joey in the news. I made a YouTube video about this today. He had one request for Dancing With The Stars, a partner, a partner who was in a healthy relationship.
He said, I wanted to be in a situation where I was comfortable that I didn't have to worry about a lot of this noise. And again, you might say, well, what noise is he talking about? Is he talking about flirting with a single person? No, no, no. I think what he's talking about is not wanting to deal, deal with people.
Bachelor Nation and or the speculation that he's having a showmance with his partner. He said, you know what? I want my partner to be in a happy relationship. I'll be in a happy relationship and then we can actually treat this dance like what it is. Uh, so it's not that he doesn't have trust in himself.
It's just that he doesn't want to have to deal with people like me spec, although I was never one to speculate on that, but you got a lot of people out there going, well, but do you see the way he touched her lower back? Whoa, it's like, okay, grandpa, chill out. You know what I mean? It's, you know, like we can.
We can touch people consensually. All right. So here's what he had to say on the almost famous podcast about his communication with his fiance, Kelsey Anderson. I did asking her how her day was, how was her workout? How was this meeting that she walked to? Like all those little things of trying to just have the open communication.
Um, But then feeling each other out to like, I want to make sure that she's feeling comfortable. And if we need to have a chill night, she'll understand that. But then if she really wants to go out and go to this party, because it's an opportunity for her to meet more people, I got to suck it up and go to that party.
But. It's been good so far. I can obviously always be better. I'm not going to act like I'm a master at this, but I think that we've been doing really well at the communication and not letting things fester if there is any type of issue. So I'm just trusting and leaning on her. She's happy, I'm happy, and we're just trying to have as much fun as we can with this awesome opportunity that came my way.
Sounds like you're doing it right. I've been married for three years. It's, uh, I would love to sit here and be like, no, this is how you should do it. I don't know. Just, you'll do your best. Uh, if you love her, you'll figure it out. Uh, Jenna, uh, Kelsey has said that you've been a support. Uh, you know, obviously your relationship with her is important too.
You've done this for 10 years. As you've said, you're not shocked, you know, by the fans reactions and these comments. What are some ways that you've kind of found to support Kelsey through this journey or just give some insight into what to expect? Yeah, um, I think it was really important right away as soon as Joey and I had met each other we were like, Let's get you guys over to our house.
I want her to meet me. I want to meet you. I want her to meet Val, meet our son, you know, just already established that relationship together too. So she felt really part of it and comfortable in this partnership because she's part of it. Um, so yeah, we did that right away before we were announced on Good Morning America as partners.
Um, they'd come over to our house. We had dinner, which was so much fun. And then she's been our like social media queen. She sends us all sorts of audios and ideas. All right. So there you can see that Kelsey Anderson is fitting in just right with the dancing world. I think, I think it's great for her. Like, like I said, they get to live in And I think they live in the grove.
I think that's where they put it. Contestants. I could be wrong. Um, you know, I don't know where it is, but you know, you're working for ABC Disney, they put you up in a nice place. They're paying Joey, you know, a hundred thousand dollars. And if he makes it through the first month, he'll get another hundred thousand or whatever it is.
So you're making a fortune. I mean, if I'm Joey, I'm like, Kelsey, go shopping, meet some friends, have fun, and let me win this thing. And, uh, so we're, we're rooting them on this week. There is no dancing with the stars as their normal time Tuesday. I believe, do I have this right? It's being skipped because of the vice presidential debate, which is Tuesday night.
I won't be watching the debate live at least because I have a standup show in New York City. Uh, again, that's tomorrow, October 1st. You can still get tickets to the show if you're in town. It's in a great location at the Midtown location of the New York Comedy Club, a 7 p. m. show. So come to the show, have a couple laughs, have a nice cold beverage, and then you can hang out with me afterwards.
Um, it's going to, I'm always so stressed when I, when I have to travel and now that I do the podcast twice a day and have a baby, it's a little wild, uh, but, um, we already flu once with the baby. So, you know, if you guys, if you guys don't know, it's, it's, um, making content on the road sucks. Uh, but New York city, it's just a whole nother ballgame because the, the, the hotels are tiny and you know, it's like 400 bucks a night.
So I'm T I take a huge loss when I go to New York, but I think it's worth it to just to get a, just to, just to really absorb that culture every once in a while. And, uh, but my setup and I'll show a photo to you guys is I use an ironing board as my desk, because they don't give you a desk normally that they have like a tiny bed, a tiny couch, and now we're going to have a tiny crib.
I don't know how they're going to do that. And I'm going to be making my personal bed. Podcast. So you'll know when I'm in New York, when the podcast sounds nice and quiet, that's because there'll be a baby sleeping next to me. Uh, but, uh, the show must go on as they say, and as the show must go on, I will continue this podcast coming up next.
Ariana Maddox explains why she has a newfound appreciation for Andy Cohen. I'll have that store story for you after a quick word from our sponsor. As we know, Arianna Maddox, star of Vanderpump Rules, is also having a career resurgence following Scandaval. Uh, she's been the host of Love Island Is it called Love Island?
USA, season six, which she described as very intense. Well, now she thanks Andy Cohen for some of the tips he gave her, uh, to moderate. Uh, a contentious cast. She said, and he gave me the best advice beforehand. He said, don't be afraid to go out there and to be you and put your own stamp on it. He's literally like the king of it.
So it was really amazing to be able to get some advice from him before doing it. She said about her at Love Island. USA season six reunion. It was a dream dual role for the former bartender who told page six, that Love Island is still her favorite show. But unlike watching the Peacock dating a competition series from the comfort of her couch where she can freely vocalize her opinions, she admitted that she absolutely had to show some restraint while in front of the cameras.
Yeah, that's what's gotta be tough. You can't just be like, that guy's an idiot. As host, there is leeway for you to feel how you feel and have a bit of your own opinion, but at the same time, you do have to be as impartial as you can, she explained. It's tough sometimes because you're watching all these things happening, and you're rooting for everyone to find love.
And you're rooting for everyone to be treated properly, but of course, life happens. So anyway, I mean, what a world for Ariana Maddix that she was, you know, been able to flourish post cheating scandal. Very happy for her. And speaking of scandal, we've discussed Chapel Roan, maybe ad nauseum by this point, because everyone has an opinion on her, the pop star who, you know, She wanted to set boundaries and say, don't come up to me if I'm walking alone.
Don't, you know, give me, give me a chance to live my normal life. And the lecturers fans have said, no, you asked for this, you signed up for this. And so she, you know, of course, had some fallout for her political opinion, which was. While I might be voting for one side over the other, I think both sides have a lot of work to do, and I'm not going to endorse anyone.
That's essentially what she said. Um, people didn't like that. Oh, you think this is just as bad as that? I mean, people are just so ready to fight with others. Well, now we have Tegan and Sarah. They are discussing Chapel Roan, setting boundaries with fans. Fun fact about Tegan and Sarah, I had no idea who they were, but I do believe they're the ones who sang Everything is Awesome, which is the Lego song.
Everything is awesome. Is that, do I have that right? Anyway. Tegan and Sarah were in my Uber several years ago when I was still driving Uber and we got to chatting and they were like, do you know who we are? And I was like, I'm sorry, I don't. And they said, we're Tegan and Sarah. And then they told me what, and I was like, oh my gosh, this is amazing.
They were so kind. I drove them, you know, from West Hollywood To downtown LA. I remember very specifically, I let them out and they were very nice to me and actually took a selfie with me and posted on their Twitter. Uh, they were, they, they, they clearly were comfortable in their celebrity, but again, Tegan and Sarah, not Chapel Rowan, like they're not getting recognized.
They have probably a little bit more of a niche celebrity fandom. Here's their thoughts on what, uh, on why it's good. Chapel Rowan is setting boundaries with their fans. While I think it is exciting and empowering to see an artist like Chapel Rowan say something that we were really afraid to say, um, all these years, I also think that there is a responsibility, not just on the fans and the artists.
It is the industry around us, the industry that makes money on turning us into celebrity endorsers and content creation and selling pictures and videos of people having their walk from the courthouse after they just filed divorce papers. Papers or whatever, like we are an industry obsessed with celebrity, you know, people make money off of this stuff And so we we can't we can't exactly like yell I mean we can fans shouldn't behave this way the way that Chapel Rowan is talking about that is inappropriate But it's not so different from the way that the paparazzi acts So if we see adults behaving this way to other adults and making money and getting rich off of it How can we expect our fans to not think that that behavior is cool?
Like, you know? And you know, it's not cool, but it's an interesting conversation. And a lot of celebrities will say, yeah, I would talk to you, but I'm with my family. And you have to realize, if you're at the airport and you're Brad Pitt, um, maybe he's a bad example. If you're at the airport and you're, I don't know, Dax Shepard, and you know, I could use any of these examples, and someone wants to come up to you, it's like, okay, you talk to that person.
But then, Then, then you start to see this commotion happening and then the next person wants to talk to you and then it just becomes people tearing you down. Now, I, I know nothing like that level of celebrity, but I will say it's interesting. I was back in my hometown in Rhode Island and there was somebody in line at brunch and they go, are you Dave Neal?
I was like, yeah, I'm Dave. And they're like, yeah, I heard your voice. Um, you know, I'm a fan, you know, watch, listen to your podcast. And it was like, really cool. Now the person behind them was like, who are you? And then they were interested in talking because they were like, oh, you're somebody I should check you out.
It was a. normal, fine conversation, but I had my baby with me and I, and at that moment I had to make sure my baby was okay. And by the way, it was a very pleasant situation. They were, they were all really nice people, but I've had to start to look at a boundary setting for my family in a way that I haven't had to worry about for myself.
And, you know, as I've got my show in New York tomorrow night, I'm asking people to come talk to me. I've got, we've got audience coming from India. We've got audience coming from different parts of the country that are, that are going to be in New York for the show. So they're going to come out and I always say.
Come take a photo, hang out, like, you know, but I'm also not at that stage where that involves 20, 000 people coming up to you and analyzing this and that. So you can only imagine it works and you have to harvest that parasocial relationship with your audience until it affects you to the point of, you just can't do that any longer.
And so I think sadly what Chaperone will realize is. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube and she's just going to have to do a better way of, I mean, I hate to say it, but living in a world where she can be more obscure. And a lot of times that's why people live in Los Angeles or New York, because you can kind of get away with dressing in your street clothes and blend in in a way that you wouldn't in other towns.
I don't know if that makes sense. Uh, but either way, I keep on coming back to talking about this because there's this entitlement that we have as audiences. That we're, that, um, that someone owes us something in return. And it's like, you don't, Chapel Rowan doesn't owe anybody anything. You enjoyed her music.
That's the exchange done period. You know, whenever I get in a riff, you know, tiff with someone online, I've been supporting you forever. Okay, first of all, thank you. But also you've gotten a hell of a lot of content from me. So I'm not going to go to bed feeling guilty that, uh, for whatever reason, you feel like you're entitled to a piece of me that you're not, you know?
Um, I just think I don't see a scenario where enough of the audiences can be educated on this because, Bieber days and the Britney Spears days. So with that said, I just think. Sadly, it's more on Chapel Rhone to learn how to navigate that, that journey. All right. Green day is in the news band from a Las Vegas radio station after Billy Joe Armstrong calls the city a shithole.
We're breaking up with green day, completely shared one sin city station. Oh, how brave of this radio station. Come on. Listen, green, green day can call. Me shitty. And I'm still going to love green day. You know what I mean? The front man was performing a show at San Fran's Oracle park this month when he expresses disapproval that his hometown baseball team, the Oakland A's are moving to Vegas, taking shots at the team's owner, according to San Fran Bay area news station, KRON four, the punk rock singer said, we don't take shit from people like effing John Fisher.
I hate Las Vegas. It's the worst shithole in America. First of all, I think there are way worse cities in Vegas, but I will say, I mean, Vegas is so fake that it's like, I don't know. I personally don't love it, but I like going back for two nights a year. I go back for reality. Steve's event that he has every year.
And by the way, his next one, I think is going to be his 50th birthday party. It's going to be a big one. So I always go back, but it's like 48 hours in Vegas and then get. The hell out KOMP 92. 3 has pulled any and all green day from our playlist. It's not us, Billy. It's you hashtag Vegas forever. It's like, Oh, shut up.
Shut. We love green day. Come on. He was just upset that his baseball team was getting sold. Another Vegas radio station was upset by Billy's comments writing. Well, sin city heard him loud and clear and. X107. 5 is not having it. In response to Armstrong's inflammatory comments, the station is banning all Green Day music, effective immediately.
Considering he played a pop up show at Fremont Country Club last year, we're surprised at his comments. The show is spectacular. But now, Armstrong has crossed a line with Vegas locals, so we're breaking up with Green Day completely. Okay, this is, it's kind of like when the Dixie Chicks were in Europe and they were like, man, F Texas or whatever they said, right?
This is what you do when you're in one city, you're, you're Do you say the other city sucks when a guy, when I go to New York, I'll be like, yeah, Philly people suck. Right. And when I'm in Philly, I'm gonna be like those crazy New Yorkers. Am I right? You're just pandering to the audience. Uh, so I'm sure Green Day will be just fine.
And speaking of being just fine, I got another connection for you. The house buyers for George Clooney's mansion have been revealed. I know one of them, or at least. I used to know one of them. I'll have this story coming up next. How Christian McCaffrey and Olivia Culpo put down quite a chunk of money for George Clooney's LA mansion.
We'll have that coming up next. Over a decade ago, I made a sketch comedy called caving, which was about a cave man drawing illicit. Images of his genitalia on a cave woman's cave wall. Now I know this sounds really pervy and that was the point. It was kind of to show how bad it would be to receive an unsolicited DP back in the stone age time.
And we actually shot it at a cave. We dressed up in cave costumes. I'm telling you this, it was actually, I think it was a really funny sketch. Uh, but the, the, uh, the woman who starred in that was a young, uh, lady named Olivia. And, you know, while she probably wishes this, uh, sketch comedy doesn't exist, it's somewhere online.
Olivia was the, um, She was, she, she was about to compete for Miss Rhode Island in the Miss USA pageant. Well, she did that and she won. And then she competed in the Miss USA pageant. And believe it or not, she won and that was crazy. And then she competed in the Miss University pageant and she won! And since then she's been a star.
Style icon, a fashion icon. Now, would she ever return my phone call? Probably not. But I'm sure if I was in the room with her, I'd be like, remember that sketch we did? And I'm sure she's like, please don't ever talk about that again. But either way, I'm happy for her to say the least. She's got a new home she's moving into.
She's married to Christian McCaffrey. I believe he's actually on injured reserve, San Francisco 49ers football player. And they just bought George Clooney's home. Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ the model and her football team. of the Miss Universe in 49ers cash to scoop up the Fryman Canyon home.
The estate, uh, was Clooney's, um, six bedroom home and it was listed, uh, just over 14 million. Nearly 30 years ago, he bought it from singer Stevie Nicks for 2. 2 million. George's wife, Amal, called the house, their private oasis back in 2018. And it's pretty secluded, totally surrounded by trees. I mean, unbelievable stuff.
And by the way, I love Fryman Canyon. It's so close to Hollywood, but it's really secluded. Culpo and Christian McRaffrey said I do at ocean house in Westerly, Rhode Island back in June. And they attend attended by several of, uh, fellow sports illustrator, swimsuit model colleagues, and some of his 49ers.
teammates. Um, so anyway, good for them. Good for them to find a nice home like that. Now I don't, I wasn't in the market for it. I'm not exactly in the, um, range to buy a 14 million home, but very happy for them. Well, in sad news, basketball icon, one of the greatest defensive players of all time, Dikembe Mutombo has passed away.
He died after a battle with cancer at the age of 58. You might remember him, Dikembe Mutombo was always blocking people's shots and then he would kind of showcase that bony finger and say, no, no, no. Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life, says NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA.
So very happy for him. I actually have a couple stories. I'm not going to get to today. Now that I'm looking, we've run a little long. So I'm going to save the Colton Underwood, um, story for the next episode tomorrow morning, uh, because we do have that to cover. So we'll hold off on that. We'll get that for you in the morning.
Uh, but also we've got this story. We'll end on some of America's stupidity, Taylor Swift. I guess a man bought a car. Her guitar at auction, an autographed guitar, and then smashed it with a hammer. So they say this, there's a whole load of teardrops on one of Taylor Swift's old guitars after a man bought her prize instrument at auction, only to immediately smash it to smithereens.
Have a listen. The guy's approaching the guitar with the hammer. Here it comes.
There it is. I mean, look, he paid four grand just to, just to show, I guess he doesn't like her politics. I'm assuming that's what it is. The footage is going viral, showing a white haired dude, grabbing a hammer and going full demolition mode on the autograph for his guitar after dropping 4, 000 on the instrument.
How in the hell did he not throw it over his head and say, smash it down like an axe. Hitting a guitar with a hammer is not the way to destroy a guitar. This is the least rockstar like way to ever destroy a guitar. He might as well have just taken like a nail gun to it. What are you doing? Smash it over your head.
Come on. Anyhow, we'll, we'll see if any Vegas people want to buy Billy, uh, Armstrong's Green Day guitar and do the same. So he was giggling like a kid in a candy store, relishing the chaos. And again, this is a guy, you know, who's Who knows, maybe he's super wealthy, but I'm sure he's got kids that are like, um, dad, we've got student loans.
We got to pay off. Can you not spend 4, 000, uh, buying a guitar that you just want to smash? Can't you spend 50 bucks and go to a rage room? People are speculating. It might be tied to politics, especially since Taylor endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Uh, but either way, look, you're allowed to do what you want with the guitar you just bought.
I would first though, if I was at the auction, make sure he paid in cash. I want, I would make sure that check. cleared before doing that. The world's deranged is what I'm trying to get at. There's a lot of mental illness out there. And, um, boy, I mean, look, there was one story that I talked about on today's YouTube channel.
A comedian I know attacked another comedian I know in Los Angeles and the district attorney apparently isn't pressing charges, even though there's video of the comic approaching a male comic approaching a female comic after outside of a comedy venue Dumped water on her and then hit her upside the head with his metal canteen.
So, um, I've posted about this on YouTube and I definitely think something needs to be done about it. And, uh, if, if anyone wants to, they can contact the LA district attorney's office to say, Hey, I don't care if you think this is a misdemeanor, this guy. Uh, he did this, it's on camera, and then he sped off and sideswiped a bunch of cars.
On behalf of the comedy community, comedy should be a place in an art where we celebrate, uh, the oddities of life, not where we are worried about, um, assault. So, um, I'll give you guys updates as they come in, but I'm really hoping that Comedian is charged. At the very least, he's been banned from about every comedy club you can imagine.
I can't imagine he's ever going to have a show he goes to where he doesn't, um, you know, Deal with some form of protest or getting canceled. I mean, no one's going to, no one's going to want to deal with the, with, with a guy who's violent like that. So again, I'll give updates as they come in, uh, because the story is developing, but I covered it all on my YouTube today and we'll have a lot to cover tomorrow morning.
Um, so stick around for then make sure you're subscribed. I know you guys already are. Uh, but tomorrow I'll be in New York, as I said, getting ready for my show, but I will have. Full episodes for you. So don't worry about that. They drop at midnight. We'll see you then. I'm Dave Neal. This is The Rush.
