Welcome to the rush hour, your daily dose of pop culture for your rush hour ride. Buckle up and enjoy the drive with your host standup comedian, Dave Neal. Good morning, everybody. Happy Monday to you out there. It is the 7th of October, 2024. And on today's episode of the morning rush, big news in the call her daddy podcast world.
As Alex Cooper scored an interview with VP Kamala Harris, but not without serious fallout from some fans. She responded to the decision to get political and we'll play what she had to say. Uh, plus could new evidence change the fate for the Menendez brothers? Dolly Parton donates a million bucks to help folks recover from Hurricane Helene and Elon Musk joined Trump in Pennsylvania and made some wild claims.
And two major networks are in an apparent bidding war for the Diddy videos. Plus we've got bachelorette Claire exposing a weird stalker situation and a possible new hurricane is headed for Florida. I've got all these stories and more coming up next on the rush. Well, as we just begin the recovery efforts for the devastation from hurricane Helene, there's actually a new, uh, possible hurricane picking up speed right now, heading for Florida.
Have a listen. And another hurricane threat is facing Florida's west coast. Just moments ago, tropical storm Milton became category one hurricane Milton and could hit Florida as a category three storm in just a few days. Now, Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties ahead of Milton, and it could bring devastating storm surge to parts of the state still recovering from Hurricane Helene.
I urge Floridians to finalize your storm preparations now. I highly encourage you to evacuate. Attorney General Ashley Moody went even further Omar, telling Floridians who ignore evacuations orders that quote you probably need to write your name and permanent marker on your arm so that people know who you are when they get to you afterwards.
So where is Milton right now? It is still sitting in the Gulf of Mexico, and that's the problem. It's sitting over very warm ocean waters, and that's why it's been able to rapidly intensify over the last 24 hours. A category one hurricane with 80 mile per hour winds sitting 800 miles away from Tampa Bay.
The track continues to keep it over the Gulf of Mexico, those very warm ocean waters, which will let it intensify again to a major category three hurricane All right. So we will keep you updated on the whereabouts of that hurricane. Well, let's do some bachelor news real quick. I'm going to have a video on this today.
Claire Crowley, uh, responded to a bizarre comment. She got, I guess, trying to expose her. The commenter said this, I saw these two in real life, her and her husband. At a hotel with their baby. And all weekend they were on their phone in front of the baby. So sad what our world has become. I feel like someone needs to tell them and all the other influencers to put down your phone.
At least try in front of your kids. It's so damaging to our human interactions and relationship. Now, look, I mean, You're not wrong that you shouldn't have your phone out in front of your kids, but we use our phone for so many different things in today's world. And Claire responded to this by saying, I don't usually respond, but this one touched a nerve.
We are damn good parents that are also human and doing the best we can. I feel like someone needs to tell the people that make judgy comments like this to also put their phone down and stop assuming things about people they don't know. Uh, this is the epitome of a troll. Do you know if I was checking on my mom, making reservations for my family, making a doctor's appointment?
So it literally goes on and on. And look, you know, I've been one to criticize kids for being on their devices while at dinner, but you know, it's a complicated world out there. A lot of parents, you know, uh, are working while they're actually with their kids and you can say, well, this is harmful. And then they could say, well, it's better than being at work and abandoning my kid.
You know, I don't know what the right answer is, uh, but I know that shaming specific parents. I don't think. that's it. Now again, like I said, I've, I've gotten hard on people saying, Hey, shouldn't we not be letting our kids be on their devices while we're out to dinner, you know, trying to have family bonding moments.
It's a, you know, distracting, but I'm not calling out any specific person when I could, but I'm not, it's a general, you know, You know, it's one thing when it's a general conversation and it's another when it's targeting and shaming someone whose situation we don't know what that's all about. Well, did you watch any movies over the weekend?
Uh, here's a deadline article. No one's laughing now. Joker folly. Uh, duh. Falls down with. 39 million opening how the sequel went sideways. So apparently it's getting terrible reviews. I guess a lot of people don't like it, but then some said, well, the reviews were so bad when I went to see it, I thought it was all right.
Uh, if anyone was better on Joker as being a winning tent pole in their fantasy box office league a year out, sorry, you just lost a ton of cash. This sequel based on a DC comics character is one of the lowest sequel openings in memory to a major franchise film based on a comic book. Yeah. I mean, 46 million is 46 million.
Uh, apparently a lot of people didn't realize it would be sort of kind of like a, like a musical, I guess, but some people thought it was brilliant. So to each their own, I suppose. Well, You know who gives influencers a bad name? Guys like Jack Dougherty. You know, this guy, he's a 20 year old. I don't know him.
I guess I'm not, uh, I'm not his demographic. He crashed his custom McLaren while on a stream texting and driving the 20 year old internet personality was cruising down a slick Miami highway in his expensive whip Saturday morning. While on the platform kick with the beginning of the now viral moment, showing him looking down at his phone while behind the wheel.
So he crashed it. It was a 300, 000 car. And he was also permanently banned from kick for, I guess, streaming while driving. Well, I mean, good. I, you got, you know, there's, you gotta, you gotta be careful out there, folks. Like, what are you doing? You know what I mean? Well, the Jim Henson family, remember Jim Henson from the Muppets, right?
The family says Scientology will not acquire the Muppet studios lot family denies report. Yes, that's right. There was a report that the historic studio lot that served as a home for the Muppets was going to change hands and end up with Scientology. But I guess that's not true. They said in regards to recent rumors about the sale of the La Brea studio lot, The Henson family is not in any business dealings with the Church of Scientology, and that organization is not in consideration as a potential buyer of the property.
Now, I'm, I, I've always been intrigued by the Church of Scientology just because, you know, I'm, I'm intrigued by cults in general. And it's very interesting. I actually know people that have joined, you know, on lower levels. And, uh, it's very interesting because they have a tax, they don't pay taxes, right?
Because they're considered a church. But at what point are you You know, like the church is based on all like their, their main sort of way of sharing their message is through their multimedia centers that they have. I mean, they've got such good, there are TV channels and radio channels, and you'll be.
Literally watching something and not realizing there's like a Scientology message behind it. I even know a lot of people that auditioned for projects and were literally, you know, rehearsing lines in a play before they realized it was Scientology back. So, I mean, they're doing innovative things to get in there.
And I think at the very least, uh, all the cults I know should at least be paying their fair share of taxes. That's what I have to say about that. Well, that's not the only problem to hit California. There's an invasive rodent called the Nutria. Are you familiar with this? They've got big orange teeth and it's an invasive species of rodent.
And it was discovered in a new part of California. And they're posing a threat to humans, pets, livestock, and the important ecosystem. These critters are invading the Bay Area, making their way into the Sacramento, uh, Delta in Contra Costa County, a critical source of water for the state. Look, I mean, if you ask me, they look adorable, so I don't see what the big problem is.
They resemble beavers and grow up to three feet long with bright orange teeth. Nutria are known to carry parasites and tapeworms. Well, clean them up a little bit. You know what I mean? Like, like, welcome him. Welcome him to California. At least the Nutria will pay taxes, right? Well. Speaking of paying taxes, here is someone who has paid her dues.
And then some Dolly Parton makes a massive donation to the, uh, sort of people that are affected by hurricane Helene. She made an announcement that she'll be donating a million dollars cash, her money, and taxes. partnering with Walmart, they'll be donating 10 million. Now, if you ask me, I'd rather Walmart just pay a higher level of corporate tax, but that's a separate issue for a separate day.
So good on them for donating money right now. Here's what she had to say in this announcement. Because then we had that crazy old. Helene. Helene. Helene. Helene. Helene. You came in here and broke us all apart. Helene. Helene, Helene, Helene. But we're all here. To me and these broken hearts, and that's what I'm doing here.
So I really, really wish that we were all together for another reason, but we all have seen the devastation. I mean, who knew? And then she went on to talk about the precious parts of the country that she is a part of. Has, you know, the grown up in that are, uh, facing this devastation think that this is a time for me to step up again for all of us to step up and do what we can.
And of course, today I wanted to announce that from myself personally, just from my own bank account, I'm donating a million dollars today, but there it is. folks. I mean, look, she puts her money where her mouth is. She's one of the most charitable people that have ever existed. And she's a living, living legend.
And in her later years, uh, you know, uh, I think, you know, you know, the country music world has always known this about her, but I really think, I mean, she's reaching sainthood, like a level. I, I'm not even saying that, uh, to be hyperbolic. Uh, she donates millions. To help kids with, uh, you know, illiteracy, uh, you know, provides books.
We got one sent in the mail to us from her foundation and, you know, she, she could easily be a billionaire if she wanted to be, but she's not because she's donated her life savings to helping others. And I think that is worth, uh, you know, uh, worth discussing with all the toxic news that's out there. It's worth showing the people that do the right thing.
All right. Well, I got a lot to get to. It's a very busy Monday morning, so stick around. We'll be back with more right after this. So you may know this about me, but I'm kind of a, an addict when it comes to diet Coke and, you know, you get a lot of people to say, well, regular Coke's actually better for you than diet.
And I go, well, I don't know about that. And they usually cite this one study that showed that like, you know, diet Coke can, can lead to cancer, even though, uh, when you read this study, it doesn't really, anyway, my whole point is I found a clip that backs the confirmation bias I want, which is diet Coke's better.
Have a listen. Is it better to have a Coke Zero or the real thing? A Coke Zero. A Coke Zero. Tell us why. Sweeteners, Aspartame, Stevia, Monk Fruit, Maltitol, Allulose, all of these sweeteners that contain zero calories. Yes, they're not good for you, right? They have consequences. They impact your microbiome. They may make you crave more foods.
They're not something good to add to your diet, but they are infinitely better for you than the 25 grams of real sugar in a real Coke. Okay. This is very important for people to hear. The diet version of a soda is infinitely better for you than the real soda with the real sugar. So there it is. But of course, you know, it comes with its own set of problems.
And I have to tell you, don't ever take your dietary advice from me. I am on a. Real, real bender. After my trip to New York, uh, you know, I was staying at a hotel on 24th and eighth, which is in Chelsea and right at that corner on a 24th and seventh, excuse me, right at that corner, there was a, a cookie shop called crumble and.
The line was around the block all day, every day. And I was like, Oh my gosh, why is the line around the block? I need to try these cookies. So I ordered six of them cost about 25 bucks. You know, there were very big cookies. I have to tell you per ounce, this was a better deal than like a subway cookie, because these were gigantic cookies, but let me tell you something.
These cookies hit me. If, if this was a drug, it was pure grade cocaine straight out of Columbia. You know what I mean? These cookies. Were so good, too good that I spiraled, I was eating them for breakfast. I couldn't lay off the, I was scraping the box to get every last morsel of these cookies. And again, they're not a sponsor.
God bless them for not being a sponsor because, uh, today I tried to go without sugar and I'm, I'm facing a real, uh, with, you know, a real. Real withdrawal. I try to eat a lot of salty foods, high protein. I'm trying to, I eat a bunch of pistachios, you know, I'm just trying to confuse my brain, drink a whole ton of water, but it sucks.
I got that. I got that addiction. You know, the good thing about a sugar addiction though, is it only lasts physically for a couple of days after that. It's just psychological. So I'm trying my best to just get through the hard parts because I mean. I do that when I travel, you know, I was eating pizza nonstop and I'm just like, all right, Dave, you know, whenever I'm in the airport, uh, you know, restaurants, I eat terrible.
So I'm here, I'm just saying this out loud. So you guys hear it. I'm going to try my best to get my act together. Cause it's, it's quite literally, um, if my kryptonite, I can't think right with it, uh, when I've had too much, too many cookies, you can tell you're like, oh, this podcast is weird today. Dave must've ate a cookie.
Well, you Here's a new story that's pretty interesting. Prosecutors in Los Angeles are examining new evidence in the Menendez brothers, 1989 slayings of their parents. Have a listen. The major turn tonight, all these years later in one of the most notorious murder trials in U. S. history, the Menendez brothers sentenced to life without parole for murdering their parents.
Well now the Los Angeles D. A. says he's reviewing new evidence. So could the Menendez brothers go free? Terry Moran covered the case years ago. He's back on the story tonight. Tonight, will the Menendez brothers go free? We have a moral and an ethical obligation to review what is being presented to us.
After more than three decades behind bars, there is now a glimmer of hope for Lyle and Eric Menendez, who are serving life in prison without parole for the brutal killings of their parents in 1989. The Los Angeles District Attorney has announced that he will review their case, after lawyers for the brothers came forward with new evidence that they say corroborates the brothers claim that they were sexually abused by their father, the crucial issue in the case.
All right. Well, uh, you know, we'll, we'll be giving any updates as they come in. I don't know if this is all because of the new TV show that came out, but either way, I mean, they've been in bars for decades now, so we'll have to see. Uh, we'll have to see what they have to say. And, uh, speaking about going behind bars, we've got Diddy behind bars and apparently there, an attorney says there are two major networks in a bidding war to buy the video of Diddy in an A list male celebrity.
First of all. I don't think this should be something that's on the market. Second of all, whoever buys it, it's going to be shared around two seconds afterwards. So I can't, I can't even understand why there's even a market for this. We know that you've seen the footage. You talked about that last week when you were with us.
So. You know, as you know who it is, and I know that you can't tell us who it is, uh, for all the reasons, right? Um, but as you know who it is, and as we're moving through this story, and it's starting to really feel like it's unraveling, and you feel bad for the person, and we don't even know who it is. Um, is there anything mo that part of it?
I really the person, part of the r and say something outside my own safety, but I want essentially bring the dog They should do something about this before it came out. So this is wrong, right? Because look, if it's a consensual experience and so on, it's in the closet, you know, that's nobody's business.
Like this is not what did he's in prison for, right? It not for people that are consensually doing whatever it's for a way it's, it's for way more reckless and scary things. So, I mean, I'll, I'll cover the story, whatever's out there, but, uh, you know, we're not gonna, uh, we're not gonna, you know, uh, I don't know, participate to the levels that, that some will.
When it comes to whatever spectacle they want, whatever witch hunt they want. Now I'll tell you what's crazy. Uh, we're going to get into some of the, uh, pop culture, political discussions that are out there regarding the presidential election, because how can you not, how can you not? We gave you 17 minutes before we dove into it.
Here's Elon Musk speaking at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech. They want to take away your right to bear arms. That they want to, it's, we're, we're, they want to take away your right to vote effectively. Text people now, and then make sure they actually do vote.
If they don't, this will be the last election. So first of all, what the hell is he talking about? You know, I'm not, I don't even know how to respond to any of that, but I think it's wild that this is somebody who owns one of the largest media platforms out there. He actually said he would remain apolitical.
And now of course, his fully endorsed Trump, which it's like, look, people can. Do whatever they want. He's allowed to endorse Trump. Um, but you know, the lying, the brazen lying, taking away your guns, uh, this is going to be the last election. What are you talking about? So that's, what's happening on the Trump side of the, of the ticket.
And now for Kamala Harris, she's actually planning an all out media blitz. Harris is also embarking on a campaign media blitz this week with appearances on popular podcasts and sit downs with big names like Howard Stern, Stephen Colbert, and the Ladies of the View. What do you make of this mix of traditional media and more targeted efforts like podcasts, and also the importance of timing?
Is it absolutely necessary right now? I think it's a wonderful recognition by her comms team and her executive leadership of her campaign that media is wherever you can get eyeballs. And listen, we do this every week. And I think we've been on TV together long enough to know that we're competing with a whole lot more outlets.
So Kamala Harris has to be in all of those spaces. So what's interesting is, you know, people, it's like, this is mainstream media, MSNBC, can you believe she's going to go on a podcast? And it's like, hello now, Trump's been going on podcasts for a while now. It's one of the. Most effective ways where you can have a long form conversation.
Now, is he out there breaking down great policy? And I don't really think so. Uh, but it is a chance to meet people at a place. What would that is longer than a 32nd ad they might see on TV. Now with that said, uh, Alex Cooper is receiving a lot of, uh, hate for her decision to have Kamala Harris on her podcast.
Uh, I want to play. The full clip of what she had to say, and we'll get to that next, right after a quick word from our sponsor. So real quick, if you don't know, uh, Alex Cooper, she's a multi multi hundred millionaire. She's had several hundred million dollar contracts. I think a 60 million, a hundred million dollars.
She's doing quite well for herself. And she's probably the biggest female voice in the world right now. If not one of them, she's like the female, the female voice. And some people are not happy that she had Kamala Harris on her podcast. Here's what she had to say addressing her audience after the interview.
Daddy gang, I went to Washington D. C. to interview Vice President Kamala Harris. As you guys know, I do not usually discuss politics or have politicians on the show because I want Caller Daddy to be a place that everyone feels comfortable tuning in. Every single week I talk about topics like mental health, relationships, sex, sexuality, trauma.
Overall, my focus is women and the day to day issues that we face. So I will be honest, I had been going back and forth with this decision for a while to get involved Or to not get involved, but at the end of the day, I couldn't see a world in which one of the main conversations in this election is women, and I'm not a part of it.
I am so aware I have a very mixed audience when it comes to politics. So please hear me when I say my goal today is not to change your political affiliation. What I'm hoping is that you're able to listen to a conversation that isn't too different than the ones that we're having here every week. I was given 40 minutes with the vice president of the United States.
No topic was off limits. I prepared seven different versions of this interview. Do I talk about the economy? Do I talk about border control? Do I talk about fracking? But then I realized you can hear about All of those issues on whichever news site you prefer. And let's be real. I'm probably not the one to be having the fracking conversation, but the conversation I know I am qualified to have is the one surrounding women's bodies and how we are treated and valued in this country.
I want to be so clear, since this isn't a one sided conversation, we reached out to former President Donald Trump to come on the show. If he also wants to have a meaningful, in depth conversation about women's rights in this country, then he is welcome on Call Her Daddy anytime. So, Daddy Gang. With all of that said let's get into it.
So here's what's really interesting to me that in today's world you have to put these kid gloves on and tell people, you know, in a two minute clip why I interviewed so and so and I don't want to lose you. And I understand why she did what she had to do here because she's getting a lot of hate from people online saying, I'm no longer listening.
I'm boycotting you, this and that. The same thing they do to Taylor Swift, right? And I understand why there's a lot of influencers and people. Put in podcasters that don't want to get into the political world. Heck I was shamed, um, uh, abundantly. I was shamed by so many people saying, I come to your channel to get pop culture news, not to get this.
And it's like, look, that's okay. You, you know, everyone's got a different reason why they come to my channel or call her daddy's channel. But when the day is over. You have to speak your truth as a, as a, as a voice, as a content creator. And in doing that, you've got to share your opinions on things and in the world we live in, that's so intertwined.
How could someone like Alex Cooper pass up the chance to interview the possible next, next generation? Future, you know, the future president and how could she pass up that chance to take that giant leap for her career, a show that was built on talking about the female body, maybe in more crude fashion, you know, as the show is built on a more sex based conversation, but how could anyone pass up that chance to take such a great leap for their career?
And it's so interesting to read some of the comments. because you see people trying to control her saying, I won't listen to you anymore. I gave you this. I gave you that I'm, I supported you. And again, it's the same stuff I've gotten in so many other content creators have gotten. And we have to understand is while, while she may ruffle feathers, while she may lose some people, those that Respect and appreciate her sharing her opinion and respect, respect her going out on the edges of the branch here to have that conversation will follow her for many more years now.
So it's not about being polarizing. Like I don't, I personally don't want to be polarizing, but it doesn't mean I'm afraid to. Call out a con when I see it, it doesn't mean I'm afraid to call out a cult when I see it. It doesn't mean I'm afraid to call out a fraudster when I see it, whether it's Laura Owens in the Clayton Eckerd case, or whether it's someone who lies on stage who owns Twitter.
You know what I mean? You got to respect the authenticity, even if it doesn't fit the side that you might be on or you don't, but for all the people that gave her all this shit, it's good to see content creators say, you know what, I'm going to risk not playing it safe because what is playing it safe? Get you anyway, you know, playing it safe.
Didn't get Alex Cooper hundreds of millions of dollars on caller daddy. No, that playing it safe. Doesn't get you anything. Say what you mean and mean what you say, live by it. I'm okay with that. And when you're okay with that, when you're impeccable with your word, and when you have a strong opinion that you can stand behind, you know, people will come and go, uh, and that's okay.
And that is okay. And that's why I really appreciate those of you that have stuck around because guess what? I'll be honest. We received a hell of a lot of negativity following our first You know, a lot of what happened in 2024 in the podcast continues to grow. So I have to go with my sort of North star here.
My guide, which is to keep being true to myself and knowing that while those loud voices may be exiting, there's a lot of people that are sticking around and bringing their new friends in, and we are welcoming as hell to all of you guys.
